Taking A Closer Look: Personal Care Product Toxins

kk

Toxins not only enter our body by what we put in our mouths, they are also absorbed into our bodies by what we put on it, i.e. our skin. Our personal care product regimes are a virtual chemical stew of unintended mixes that can combine in our blood streams and wreak havoc inside our  bodies. 60% of what touches our skin enters our bloodstream in less than a minute .

For children, the effects of absorbed toxins are greater than the exposure of an adult.  Now think about your day and then what goes onto your body from toothpaste, lotion, make-up, shampoo, deodorant, perfume, sunscreen, moisturizer, shaving cream, etc.

Some product ingredients are worse than others. These are basic ingredients to avoid when shopping or you can look at the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database

(http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/) to see where your products rank and what they contain.

Learn to modify your personal care routine so it is simpler with fewer products while still maintaining a routine that allows you to put your best foot forward.

Items to Avoid in Personal Care Products

 1. Parabens - Widely-used estrogen mimics that can disrupt our endocrine system

2. Fragrance - This broad label lumps together a wide array and quantities of potentially volatile compounds that do not require specific regulation of their own.

 3. Nanoparticles - Related to the size of a molecule that makes it easier to apply to the skin so it blends easily but can be absorbed to the blood stream via the skin if small enough; often found in sunblock and lotion as minerals

 4. Formaldehyde - A fixative in nail polish and even on new textiles like clothing that acts as a neurotoxicant

 5. Phthalates - Commonly used hormone disruptor linked to a suite of diseases including childhood asthma; also a classified obesogens

 6. Petroleum products - Commonly used in personal care products with the main issue of contamination from many environmental toxins

 7. Triclosan - Hormone disruptor and agent to creating superbugs. It stores in our fatty tissue like most hormone disruptors thus can be long-lasting even after we choose to avoid it.

 8. Lead - Neurotoxicant in coloring.

 9. Mercury - Neurotoxicant in beauty products.

 10. Dioxins - By-product of bleaching processes that is prevalent and known to cause health problems from compromised immunity to developmental issues to cancer. Avoid in diapers and feminine hygiene products.

Our recommendation is NOT to throw away all your personal care products at once. Choose one category at a time to focus on replacing. Natural products are very subjective, and it may take some time to find ones you like.
