Bone Health: What You Should Know

When it comes to bone health, there are many factors that come into play in keeping our bones healthy and strong including; age, physical activity, diet, medications, posture, sunlight exposure, hormonal balance, digestive health, trauma and more.

A loss of bone density occurs naturally as we age, but it can occur earlier and with greater severity for women. Bone health supplements help to ensure you always have the nutrients you need. But despite their importance, it's easy to take bone health for granted. Unlike a sore throat, an upset stomach, or a twisted ankle, we usually will not feel it if our bones are in trouble.

There are two major conditions associated with bone loss, Osteoporosis and Osteopenia. Osteoporosis is a more severe case of bone loss that weakens the bones and makes them more likely to fracture. Osteoporosis is defined as “a bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both, where Osteopenia, is a condition where people's bone density is lower than is usual for their age. Both conditions are varying degrees of bone loss, as measured by bone mineral density, a marker for how strong a bone is and the risk that it might break.

Below are vitamins and minerals that can assist in bone health:

Calcium: promotes bone formation and strength to prevent osteoporosis and bone loss (1000mg/day)

Vitamin D3: allows Calcium to be absorbed and used by the body to build strong bones (1000-5000IU /day)

Vitamin K: helps deliver calcium to the bone (100mcg/day) (on blood thinners- consult your doctor first)

Magnesium helps increase bone density (300 to 500mg/day).

Boron: helps your body retain more Calcium and Magnesium (3-5mg/day)

Manganese: helps the body form strong bones by assisting with calcium absorption (1-2mg/day)

Phosphorus: required in supporting increase in bone mass (up to 90mg/day)

Copper: is an essential trace mineral for bone health maintenance (1mg/day)

Strontium: helps slow down bone weakness and speeds up bone strength (680 mg/day)

Silicon: helps woman with osteoporosis (25 to 50mg/day)

Lysine: may help prevent bone loss associated with osteoporosis. (500mg/day)
