Carpal
Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) has become one of the most widespread
occupational health problems we face today. It affects millions of
people a year, (women are three times as prone to developing the
condition as men) and with our growing reliance on computers there
seems to be no end in sight. There are a number of different ways to
treat carpal tunnel. In most cases, a chiropractic adjustment to the
affected area is extremely effective.
The syndrome can have
several different causes, starting from the neck, shoulder, poor
posture, chest muscles and the majority of times, a misaligned wrist
bone pressing on the median nerve.
Misaligned bones in the
wrist can be caused by an injury or sustained use from common
activities like typing, chopping, hammering, or pushing.
Symptoms
of CTS range from wrist pain, finger numbness or tingling, burning,
weakness or loss of grip strength, neck pain and loss of sleep due to
discomfort at night
Chiropractic Treatment of CTS
Since
the nerves that supply the wrist exit the neck, our office begins
with a thorough investigation of the spine, shoulder, chest area, arm
and wrist to locate any potential compression along the nerve's
pathway to the hand.
If compression is located, we
incorporate several treatment options including: gentle instrument
adjustments, deep tissue massage, cold laser and therapeutic
exercise.
If examination findings indicate, X-rays and other
diagnostic studies may be needed. These treatments, in most cases,
effectively alleviate and eventually eliminate the symptoms
associated with CTS.
Left untreated, the syndrome can cause
permanent damage to the hand or thumb.
Organizations such as
the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and the University
of Maryland Medical Center list Chiropractic as an alternative
treatment for CTS.
